Mount Mitchell (doing its thing)
My son lives in Asheville, NC and hikes many of the mountain trails. He took this picture of Mount Mitchell, which is the highest mountain in the eastern US, as the clouds worked their way up slope. Because clouds appear to be smoke, the area is known as "The Great Smokey Mountains". Slabs of exposed granite define some of the higher peaks in the Appalachians. Climbers call these slabs, friction rock because to prevent sliding off one must create friction, usually standing up-right so the soles of your boots create friction. One's tendency is to hug the mountain, but this usually results in a bad ending. Think of it like driving on ice. One turns the steering wheel in the opposite direction of sliding.
